Conference restructuring has dominated college football headlines for the better part of the last two offseasons. The shocking announcement of Oklahoma and Texas moving to the SEC set off a domino effect that overthrew the team down to the FCS level. In 2023, the biggest shake-up of college football in over a decade will take place.

In total, at least 12 teams will move conferences and 2 new members will start FBS membership in 2023.
2023 Conference Reformation: New Big 12 Members
BYU Cougars
Origin: Independent (since 2011)
Previous meeting: Mountain West, Western Athletic, Skyline
After compiling a record of 99-56 as an FBS independent, BYU is back at the conference. Kilani Sitake has turned down multiple bigger offers over the past few years to keep BYU a strong contender.
BYU hails from Provo, Utah and probably has the most beautiful stadium backdrop of any school. They are also a renowned program, with Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer (1990) and national championship winners in 1984.
Cincinnati Bearcats
Origin: American Athletic (since 2013)
Previous meeting: Big East, Conference-USA, Missouri Valley, Independent
Cincinnati became the first Group of Five Conference team to qualify for the 2021 College Football Playoffs. After a historic season, the Bearcats sold out tickets for an entire season for the first time in school history.
They play at the historic Nippert Stadium, FBS’s third oldest stadium. But they have been playing on the same ground since 1901. Cincinnati has also won his two of his last three AAC Championships and entered a new era of the Big 12 under his coach newly hired Scott Satterfield.

Previous meeting: Conference-USA, Southwest, Missouri Valley, Independent
During his tenure with the ACC, Houston won 12 or more games twice, most recently in 2021. Also under head coach Dana Holgosen, he has participated in his games in the Bowl for three consecutive seasons, winning his last two games.
Houston is the fourth largest city in the United States and has a big footprint in the Big 12. However, his TDECU stadium, built in 2014, will be the smallest of the Big 12 at 40,000 seats with no plans for expansion.
UCF Knights
Origin: American Athletic (since 2013)
Previous meeting: Conference-USA, MAC, Independent
UCF launched its FBS membership in 1996, making it the youngest Power Five program in the country. However, in his relatively short history at the FBS level, UCF won seven of his 10+ games and won an undefeated national championship in 2017.
The program is very resilient and has gone from 0 to 10 wins in 4 years. TwiceUCF is also the largest university in the United States with approximately 70,000 students.

Charlotte 49ers
Birthplace: Conference-USA (since 2015)
Charlotte moved to FBS in 2015 and had the smallest college football venue in the country for the 2022 season. Jerry Richardson Stadium on his gorgeous UNC Charlotte campus has a capacity of just 15,314, but he plans to expand to 30,000 in the next few years.
Charlotte’s addition was strategic to add Queen City to the AAC fold. With over 30,000 students, his UNC-Charlotte is her second largest university in North Carolina. When it comes to football, FBS has only won one season in its history (2019, 7-6).
Florida Atlantic Owl
Birthplace: Conference-USA (since 2013)

FAU is located in beautiful Boca Raton and AAC has three offices in Florida (Tampa, Orlando and Miami). In 2004 he was promoted to FBS level and his FAU has been a big name destination in need of a reset.
Lane Kiffin, Willie Taggart, Carl Perini and now Tom Herman make up four of Boca’s all-time six head coaches. The area is very popular and hosts its own bowl his game, the Boca Raton Bowl, at FAU Stadium.

AAC already had a footprint in Dallas, so they included North Texas and added Fort Worth. Mean Green will also bring in a new head coach named Eric Morris, who called a play at Washington State University after working with the Incarnate Ward in 2021.
The most unique stadium in the country is Apogee Stadium, which features large end zone stands in the shape of an eagle tail. The name ‘Mean Green’ is actually No Coming from NFL Hall of Fame player “Mean” Joe Greene, the cheer was first heard in 1966. Other famous UNT athletes: Chuck Beatty, Brian Waters and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin.

Previous meeting: Western Athletic, Southwest
Academic affiliation may be accompanied by the intention to strengthen scholars. Rice has appeared in one cup since his 2015 (lending his Tree Bowl this year despite losing record), and since 1961 he has only appeared in six.
Rice has an acceptance rate of just 9.5% and has received many academic accolades. Additionally, they are renowned football programs. Their stadium was built to host the Super Bowl. It also featured President John F. Kennedy’s famous “We Chose to Go to the Moon” speech.
UAB blazer
Coming From: Conference-USA (rejoined in 2017)
Previous meeting: Conference-USA, Independent
The UAB made headlines when they hired Super Bowl QB Trent Dilfer as their next head coach. UAB supported football from 1996 until he was 2014 before it was abolished. Bill Clark was hired as the program’s head coach when it was revived in 2017, and the Blazers went 49-26 under Clark.
Just one season after reviving their football programme, UAB have won 11 games, including their first bowl win in 2018.
UTSA Roadrunners
Birthplace: Conference-USA (since 2013)
Previous meeting: western athletic
Under head coach Jeff Traylor, UTSA has gone 25-5 over the last two seasons and won two Conference USA championships. Star QB Frank Harris has announced his return for 2023, ushering in a new era for the Roadrunners.
UTSA is a new member of the FBS ranks and played its first season in the final season of the WAC in 2012. It then moved to Conference USA, where it met with little success until Trailer took over in 2020. It was the elusive first bowl victory, posting a 0-3 record under trailer and the best ever record of 0-4 in a bowl game.
2023 Conference Reorganization: New Conference – USA Members

Liberty joined the ranks of FBS in 2018, handing over the keys to Hugh Freese after one season under the guidance of Turner Gill. Freese led the Flames to his 34-16 record, including his 10-1 record in 2020.
This is Liberty’s first conference affiliation in her short FBS career. After Freeze left Auburn, they will be under new leadership after hiring Coastal Carolina’s Jamie Chadwell as head coach. We are one of the Group of Five’s premier stadiums.
New Mexico State Aggies
Origin: Independent (since 2018)
Previous meeting: Sun Belt, Western Athletic, Big West, Missouri Valley, Pacific Coast Athletic Association (PCAA), Border Intercollegiate Athletic Association (BIAA)
Despite being FBS’ bottom program for quite some time, New Mexico has never lost a bowl game. Incredibly, its history dates back to his 1931.
But the Aggies bring back solid head coach Jerry Kill and exciting star QB Diego Pavia. The decision to add New Mexico met with backlash, but the Aggies have won the Bowl this year, and their roster could be a force at next year’s conference.
New FBS members in 2023

Jacksonville State has a long football history. They played his first season in 1904 and have enjoyed much success in recent times. Gamecocks announced that in November 2021 he would accept an invitation from FBS to attend Conference-USA this season.
Sam Houston State Bearcats
The 2020 FCS National Champion will be promoted to FBS in 2023. Since 2011, Bearcat has made his three appearances at the FCS National Championship, but won the elusive first title in his third attempt. SHSU will attend Conference-USA at the start of the 2023 season.
Wait a minute!There’s More
Kennesaw State University has accepted an invitation to join the FBS ranks starting in 2024. The announcement he made in mid-October. In 2022 they will be members of Conference-USA. Kennesaw State University has hosted football since 2015 after he struggled for eight years to get the program up and running.
Texas and Oklahoma may not wait until 2025 to join the SEC. According to the December 2022 report, the two schools early enrollment requestpossibly with this major restructuring in 2023.
