Baylor needs a shakeup.
Just one year after their Big 12 title and Sugar Bowl victory, the Bears have their second losing record in three years. They lost four straight games to end the season.
The collapse is not a single cause, and there are many reasons for Baylor’s late-season struggles, the most prominent of which is the lack of production from the center of the second half.
Shapen has the talent to play at a high level, and he has shown that throughout the Big 12 Championship Game and the first half of the year. But given his struggles in the second half of the season, it would be irresponsible for the Bears not to bring in another quarterback.
Enter Malik Hornsby, a former four-star recruit from Fort Bend (TX) Marshall, who served as KJ Jefferson’s backup in Arkansas.
Hornsby has a history with Baylor. According to 247 Sports, he was “very close” to a commitment to the Bears before Matt Rule left to coach the Carolina Panthers in 2019. He ended up in Arkansas and the rest is history. is.
It was a big win for Baylor to sign Hornsby in 2020. Sims. But signing him for 2023 is just as important.
Even with limited playing time, Hornsby demonstrated his elite athleticism at Fayetteville. He was always fast, running 10.88m his 10.88m and his 22.39m he 22.39m as a high school senior. Sam Pitman, a well-established starting pitcher at quarterback, and the Razorbacks wanted his speed on the field.
“It was really nice to have him in there because of his speed,” running back Raheim Saunders told the media. Game speed and IQ. ”
In 15 games for Arkansas, Hornsby completed 18 of 39 passes for 314 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. He also ran 57 times for 307 yards and a touchdown and caught two passes for 8 yards.
A major factor in Baylor’s offensive struggles this season has been the presence of unhurried threats at quarterback. Last season, Jerry Bohannon tallied his 323 yards and his 9 touchdowns. Shapen followed that up with rushing for 96 yards and two touchdowns, both in explosive wins (Albany and Texas). Football is heading into an era of double-threat, and Hornsby will soon become the most dynamic quarterback in the Big 12.
In a recent Instagram Live, he announced his top three schools (UNLV, Baylor and Nebraska). UNLV isn’t in the Power Five, but the Rebels hired former Arkansas defensive coordinator Barry Odom as head coach earlier this month. Nebraska is captained by Rules, which has a long-standing relationship with Hornsby, but Sims made a commitment to the Huskers last week.
With three years left in the qualification, Hornsby will become the highest-ranked Baylor quarterback since Jarrett Stidham. It can cause serious problems with your defense.
While the Portal certainly has more accomplished quarterbacks at the college level, including Virginia’s Brennan Armstrong and Boise State’s Hank Bahamier, Hornsby is one of Grayson McCall’s transfer quarterbacks for this side. It has the highest ceiling of all.
He life as a passerbybut Hornsby could become one of the most electric signal-callers in the country, and would be a great addition to the Baylor team desperate to find the juice.
