Less than a month after entering the transfer portal, former Georgia Tech quarterback Jeff Sims has found a new home in the Big Ten.
Sims is set to move to Nebraska and play under new head coach Matt Ruhl, who was hired last month.
Sims comes to Georgia Tech as a four-star recruit in the 2020 class. He was previously with Florida State, where his former head coach at the time, Jeff, was a big recruiting win for Collins. Sims started out as a true freshman and actually made his first start against the Seminoles. He showed flashes of being a high-level player, but inconsistent play and injuries hampered Sims during his time at Atlanta.
Sims was the starting quarterback of the season, but was injured late in the win against Duke and again early in the loss against Virginia. That was the last time Sims took a photo for his yellow jacket.
Sims would serve as an emergency option at quarterback for games against Florida State, Virginia Tech, and Miami, but after the Miami game, interim head coach Brent Key announced that Sims would be leaving the team. Here’s what Key said:
“As far as Jeff is concerned, Jeff will never be on the soccer team. I am in therapy and rehab and have been stating this since day one, for the best interests and health of the team and Georgia Tech, either in meetings or out of practice. Decisions will be made as to how and for the safety of the players.”
In three seasons as the Yellow Jackets quarterback, Sims had 4,464 yards, 30 touchdowns and 23 interceptions. His career completion rate was 57.5%. Sims also scored 1,166 rushing yards and his 11 touchdowns with Yellow during his Jackets career.
Currently, Georgia Tech has only two scholarship quarterbacks on its roster next season, Zach Pyron and Zach Gibson. The Yellow Jackets are currently weighing their quarterback options for next season, and Texas A&M transfer Haynes his King visited campus this weekend.
