Let’s take a look at some numbers for the 2022 high school soccer season…
team
Salisbury are 11-2, the 43rd time a Rowan County team has won 10 or more games in a season.
Salisbury has accounted for 14 of those seasons, and Boyden’s two seasons add up to 16 seasons.
West Rowan owns 12 and North Rowan owns 8.
Hitting the 10-win plateau will be harder when the regular season drops from 11 to 10 games.
This is the fifth time Rowan’s team posted an 11-2 record. The other was the 1974 Hornets coached by Pete Stout. In 1983 South his Rowan Raiders set a school record for his coach’s season of Larry Deal. Scott Young’s 2006 and 2007 West Rowan teams.
Carson’s offensive and defensive numbers (5-6) weren’t as good as they were in 2021, but Carson can’t complain. The bottom line – 5-6 – was the best for the Cougars since the 2015 season.
South Rowan allowed 44.9 points per game, which sounds scary but was still far from the school record of 49.1 points allowed.
East Rowan’s defensive numbers were about the same as in 2021, but their offense improved by 5 points per game. The Mustangs were on the right track even though he only won one game for the second season in a row.
North Rowan’s offense is down 5 points per game from 2021, but their defense has improved by 8 points per game.
West Rowan’s offense wasn’t as strong as it was in 2022, but the Falcons still scored a lot of points and their defense was a little better. The difference between winning 9 and his winning 7 was finding a way to win Wild his games with Davey and Carson.
Salisbury boasted the best offensive (39.9 points per game) and defensive figures (12 points per game) in the county, but even those Stout figures are enough to see the Hornets dominating on both sides of the ball in 2021. I was somewhat down from the crazy stats I posted when I set the record.
Individual scoring
Salisbury’s JyMikkah Wells had a rare 200-point season with 35 touchdowns.
North Rowan’s Jamius Morrow, who had 28 touchdowns and eight two-point conversions, scored 176 points.
passage
North Rowan’s Mario Sturdivant tops Rowan County’s career list with 6,556 passing yards since the late 1990s.
He held off strong challenges from West Rowan’s BJ Sherrill (6,188) and East Rowan’s Samuel Willick (6,525).
Notable among the current players is North sophomore Jeremiah Alford.
Alford was in the rare position of starting quarterback on his first night as a freshman and had some great numbers as a freshman and sophomore, but his high school career was still in progress and he ‘s best two seasons yet…before him. He threw for his 3,369 yards and is already in the county’s all-time top 20. His pace is he’s about 6,700 yards. Whether he can keep up that pace without Amari MacArthur throwing the ball is a million dollar question.
Salisbury is a run-first team, but two-season Hornets quarterback junior Mike Getter has 2,743 efficient passing yards that would rank high on the county’s all-time passing list.
John Knox (2007-10) holds the Salisbury record for all-time passing yards of 3,200 yards. Getter, if healthy, will clearly overtake Knox in 2023.
West Rowan’s Lucas Graham had an incredible senior season in terms of passing yards. His 2,426 passing yards in his 12 games is a West School record and ranks him sixth on the all-time county list.
Graham has had his ups and downs, he’s had some interceptions, but when it turned on he was really good. He had three 300-yard games, including 388 in the Falcons’ thrilling win over Davey. It was his third-biggest pass his game in county history.
In terms of one-game completions, Wyrick’s 36 in a playoff game at Southpoint in 2014 could last a while.
Wyrick is also the county leader with 74 career touchdown passes.
Alford has 42, including five in playoff games as a freshman, so he’s also challenging that county record.
Getter threw 34 TD passes.
South Rowan sophomore Brooks Overcash broke the Raiders’ one-game school record with 295 yards this season in a loss to East Rowan.
Transit attacks are occurring around counties and states. Seasons over 1,000 yards used to mean headlines. All six schools had him a 1,000-yard passer this season.
Quickly
While most of the county relied more and more on passing to move the ball, Wells broke Salisbury’s old-school record as a heart-pounding workhorse with 219 carries. He basically did what he did for 11 games, missing one full game and most of another with injury.
Wells finished as the third-best rusher in country history behind West’s KP Parks (2006-09) and Carson’s Sean Warren (2007-10).
Wells’ most significant entry in the Salisbury school record books is his 84 touchdowns. This is his second record in the county, behind the surreal record of 158 that Parks racked up. Parks scored 59 touchdowns in his senior year alone.
Wells also set Salisbury school records for TDs in one season (35), yards rushing in one season (5,465), and rushing yards in one season (2,023). Rushing 2,023 yards should have pretty good karma for a member of his 2023 class. The number will be easy to remember.
North Rowan’s Morrow was the county’s only 1,000-yard rusher, other than Wells. Morrow recorded 1,375 running yards on his 141 carries. So he’s 9.8 yards per carry. He left a lot.
Because Morrow is a junior, moving up the county all-time chart in 2023 would add significantly to his current career total of 2,889 rushing yards. He should finish as a 4,000-yard player and be among the county’s all-time top 10 rushers.
The North School record that Morrow is aiming for is a career touchdown. He has a total of 54, including the five he scored for his national team when he was promoted at the end of his freshman year. The school record is Jaleke Chambers with his 72 TDs (2011-14), and 72 is very within reach for Morrow who can score on offense, defense or special teams.
Just how much the game has changed is evident from the 2022 Rushing Leaders list. The No. 3 and No. 4 rushers were dual-threat quarterbacks Alford and Morrow. Both broke through 900 rushing yards, and if the team were one game ahead in the playoffs, he would undoubtedly be the 1,000-yard rusher.
No. 5 on the rushing list this season was West Rowan’s Landon Jacobs, who had 901 total yards despite missing several games.
West’s Evan Kennedy had 656 rushing yards, a pretty remarkable total for two reasons. He was primarily a receiver and his season was cut short by injuries.
Most of Kennedy’s rushing yards came while standing in for the injured Jacobs.
Salisbury’s Jamal Rule, who was primarily a defensive player, somehow managed to rush for 723 yards. Most of his production came when he was replaced by an injured Wells and East he dominated victories over Rowan and South he over Rowan.
East Rowan’s Blake Hill had a 200-yard rushing game against South Rowan, accounting for most of the season’s yardage.
Two players, Carson’s Emory Taylor and South Rowan’s Bronson Hunt, had a fair amount of passing, rushing and receiving yardage, but it’s no easy task.
reception
West Rowan’s Adrian Stockton, the first senior to make an impact for the Falcons, had one of the most notable receiving seasons of 2022.
Stockton’s 1,209 receiving yards fit for the fifth-ever receiving season in the county. He achieved extraordinary total yardage on his 54 catches.
He capped off his spectacular season with a 200-yard effort in a playoff loss at West Henderson.
Stockton’s 54 catches didn’t challenge school or county records, but it was still a top 15 season across the county.
North Rowan’s Amari MacArthur didn’t have a great season as much as he did in 2021, but he still excelled, gaining 2,424 receiving yards and finishing fifth on Rowan County’s all-time receiving list.
McArthur’s 32 all-time TD catches — 11 as a senior, one more than Stockton — tie for fifth in county history. East His Rowan Johnny Yarbrough holds the record for 43 since 1970.
MacArthur graduates with many school achievements. In addition to all-time TD catches and all-time receiving yards, McArthur leads in TD catches in a season (16 yards in 2021), yards received in a season (1,191 in 2021), and yards received in a game. (273 yards against North Stanley in 2021). ).
Carson threw well this season but didn’t have many receivers. Because the target was split fairly evenly between the trio of Taylor, BJ Howard and CJ Guida.
Salisbury is typically a run first and has a modest career receiving record compared to some schools in the county. We recorded and made the most of our goals. That’s his 17.9 yards per catch.
Walker, who has five Division I offers, has 58 career catches for 1,113 yards and 15 receiving TDs, and if 2023 can match his stats in 2022, he’ll be on the mend. will break all career school receiving records. Most of Salisbury’s career receiving records are held by Walker’s former teammate Marcus Cook.
East QB Gavin Walker racked up a lot of short completions and East receivers racked up a lot of catches.
AJ Goodman and Evan Porter each recorded 45 catches. This put him in the Mustang’s top 10 all-time list of his season and in the top 40 in the county record books.
