New Canaan’s Drew Pyne has found a new football home in the desert.
As first reported by ESPN’s Pete Sammel, quarterback Pine, who has played the last three seasons at Notre Dame, is heading west to join Arizona State’s program.
After leading the Fighting Irish to an 8-2 record in 10 games this fall, Pine entered the transfer portal earlier this month.
Pine visited ASU’s campus this weekend to meet with new coach Kenny Dillingham, who was hired to replace Herm Edwards on Nov. 27, according to ESPN. Dillingham is an ASU graduate.
Pyne tweeted a picture of himself in Sun Devils colors with the words “Committed” and “#ForksUp” in reference to ASU’s Trident logo. He has three years of eligibility left after joining the Notre Dame program starting in 2020.
The 6-foot-5, 205-pound Pine took over as Notre Dame’s starting quarterback after Tyler Buchner was injured in a 26-21 loss to Marshall in September.
Ireland went 0-2 after that defeat, but with Pine in charge, they went 8-2 and finished 8-4 overall.
Pine led Notre Dame to victories over California, North Carolina and BYU in his first three games as a starter. His season records included his 35–14 victory over Clemson on November 5 and his four wins in his five games against top 25 teams.
He completed 164 of 254 passes for a 64.6 completion percentage with 22 touchdown passes and 6 interceptions. He ranks 20th in the nation for individual quarterback efficiency.
After Drew entered the transfer portal, his father George said: He made great friends, enjoyed playing football there and was mentored by many great coaches. It was an experience of a lifetime for him and as his parents, we couldn’t be more proud of him and thank Notre Dame.
“I’m really proud of Drew. I’m proud of how he treated himself and how he treated himself and how he played.”
Pine owns many of New Canaan’s career passing records, including yards and touchdowns, has appeared in two state finals and won one championship with the Rams. He was a four-star recruit after high school.
As a New Canaan senior, he went 161-of-252 for 2,107 yards and 24 touchdowns, with just seven interceptions. Pine also received offers from Alabama, Michigan, Oklahoma and Auburn.
