KEARNY, Nebraska (Press Release) – Josh Lynn, head football coach at the University of Nebraska-Kearny, announced today that he is leaving the program to join West Texas A&M University.
Lynn has managed the Ropers since 2017 and has a record of 33-25 in that time, excluding the 2020 unofficial season. UNK won the Mineral Water Bowl in 2019 and in 2021 he advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs. This year’s team had 8 wins and 3 losses.
Located in Canyon, West Texas A&M is a Division II school that participates in the Lone Star Conference. The Buffaloes are 5-6 this season.
UNK Athletics Director Mark Bauer said, “Today is a difficult day for roper football because Coach Lynn means so much to us. He helped build a successful playoff team, increased fan interest and community support, and positively impacted Roper Football and student-athletes in countless ways.”
Lin met with players and staff this afternoon to share his decision. UNK will immediately begin a nationwide search for his replacement.
“We are rapidly recruiting new coaches and I am confident that we will find skilled coaches to continue the successful tradition of Roper Football,” said Bauer.
A native of Eunice, New Mexico, and a graduate of Eastern New Mexico University, Lynn was head football coach at his alma mater and the New Mexico Military Institute before joining UNK.
His roper team has shown steady improvement, with the 2021 team going 10-3, recording double-digit wins for the third time in school history. His quarterback, TJ Davis, finished runner-up in the 2021 Harlon Hill His Trophy and was awarded Division II Player of the Year. He is also a finalist for this award this season.
During his playing career, Lynn was a two-time first-team All-Conference tight end, helping Eastern New Mexico win back-to-back division titles.
