Corn quarterback Avery Johnson rushed for a touchdown in the Eagles’ 52-51 victory in the Derby on Friday. K State’s commit finished with seven points in a come-from-behind victory.

The Wichita Eagle has released its annual Top 33 list to honor the best players in Kansas high school football starting in the 2022 season.

Mays senior quarterback Avery Johnson was named Offensive Player of the Year, Andale senior linebacker Riley Marks was named Defensive Player of the Year, and Andale coach Dylan Schmidt was named Coach of the Year.

The Eagle also released full Kansas high school football all-state teams for all classes on Friday.

Notes: He threw for 3,495 passing yards and 36 touchdowns to earn the Eastern Kansas League Offensive Player of the Year award and lead Bishop Meage to the Class 4A State Championship.

Mikey Bergeron, Mill Valley… DB… 6-2… 195… Sr.

Notes: Finishing with 64 tackles and 3 tackles led the defense that propelled Mill Valley to its fourth straight Class 5A state championship.

Zach Darche, Blue Valley West… QB-LB… 6-2… 210… Sr.

Notes: Penn’s commit and Class 6A-level rare two-way star made 102 tackles, including 11 losses at linebacker, earning Defensive Player of the Year honors in the Eastern Kansas League for a total of 1,547 yards and 21 touchdowns at quarterback.

Dylan Edwards, Derby… RB… 5-9… 165… Sr.

Notes: Two Top 11 selections and a Colorado commit led Derby to the Class 6A Semifinals with 1,900 rushing yards, 227 receiving yards, 279 returning yards and 37 total touchdowns.

Cooper Hajek, Nemaha Central… RB-LB… 6-2… 230… Sr.

Notes: The two-way star who led Nemaha Central to a perfect 13-0 record and the Class 2A State Championship. On offense he had 2,094 running yards and 43 touchdowns, and on defense he had a total of 80 tackles, two sacks and an interception.

Keller Hara, St. Mary’s…QB…6-0…170…Sr.

Notes: Star gunslinger with 2,096 passing yards, 960 yards rushing and 42 total touchdowns offensively leading St. Mary’s to the Class 1A State Championship.

Avery Johnson, Mays… QB… 6-3… 175… Sr.

Note: With two top 11 picks committed to playing quarterback at Kansas State, Mays passed for 2,768 yards, rushed for 817 yards, and had just 3 interceptions for a total of 44 touchdowns. and won the Class 5A state title for the second year in a row.

Jack Krause, Andale… OL-DL… 5-10… 240… Sr.

Note: The dominant force on the lines on either side of the ball for the Andale team, who won four consecutive Class 3A state championships by force.

Riley Marks, Andale… RB-LB… 6-1… 220… Sr.

Notes: Andale’s most important two-way player, nearly impossible to beat at fullback and nearly impossible to block at linebacker, during Andale’s 51-game winning streak and four-year Class 3A title.

Joe Otting, Topeka Hayden… OL-DL… 6-5… 280… Sr.

Note: He has a long-standing reputation as one of the best offensive linemen to come out of Kansas, and was a dominant force on the Wildcats’ defense.

Keenan Schultz, Manhattan… QB… 5-10… 165… Sr.

Notes: The star dual threat quarterback who led Manhattan to a perfect 13-0 record and Class 6A state championship with 1,344 passing yards, 1,148 rushing yards and 30 total touchdowns.
